The Hyperbook by Mollat editions: when 18th century meets 21th.

Mollat Editions just reissued a book written by Victor Louis in 1782 about the Theatre of Bordeaux, France. “Salle de Spectacle à Bordeaux” is made interactive by the  numerous digital content offered through the book: videos, pictures, comments and 3D animations. Our partner Axyz  was in charge of Augmented Reality integration on this cultural project.

AR allows to incorporate this digital content without altering the original 18th century book. In downloading the free mobile app, users can scan the pages and enhance their reading experience. For example, they can discover the Theatre in 3D.  Those without a compatible mobile device can live the AR experience on the website on any computer with a webcam, through D’Fusion technology.

Total Immersion, Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishin and Tony Diterlizzi Partner to Create Extraordinary Digital Content For ‘The Search For Wondla’

If a picture is worth a thousand words, what’s an augmented reality experience worth?

Legions of young readers can now to find out, with the publication of bestselling and award –winning author Tony DiTerlizzi’s “The Search for Wondla.”  Total Immersion, the global leader in augmented reality, has teamed with Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers and DiTerlizzi to create fantastical extra digital content for DiTerlizzi’s new series, the first book of which is also called “The Search for Wondla” and was published on Sept. 21.

This marks the first time that Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing has used augmented reality in a novel, and the first time that Total Immersion has deployed its technology in both a novel and the book’s associated marketing campaign.   In The Search for WondLa, all the reader needs to trigger the AR experience is a webcam, enabling him/her to access the hidden features in the book through three pages of illustrations – the key to unlock the sights and sounds of the main character’s journey, via an interactive map.

In The Search for WondLa, DiTerlizzi and Total Immersion leverage the storytelling strength of AR to create a holistically immersive experience for readers, fashioning several scenarios where AR is available within the book.  By embedding AR in the work, the author’s words and illustrations are enhanced, palpably altering the experience – and offering something unique to every reader.   The AR builds as the reader goes deeper into the story.

Award-winning author and illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi, illustrator of the Spiderwick Chronicles, is launching a new printed children’s fantasy novel featuring special “keys” unlocking a digital world through the use of augmented reality. The book launches in North America tomorrow, Tuesday September 21.

The novel, called The Search for WondLa, is the first of a series that centres around a girl named Eva Nine who is raised by a robot on a planet named Orbona. While searching for other humans, Eva encounters all sorts of characters and ultimately learns about the meaning of family.

DiTerlizzi worked with Total Immersion to create unique online digital content for the new series. In spots thoughout the novel readers are encouraged to enter an augmented reality—integrating print with the digital world—by going online, downloading a WondLa-Vision player and using their computer webcam.

Readers view interactive 3D graphics in a live video stream. Simon & Schuster, publishers of the novel, along with DiTerlizza, approached Total Immersion based on the company’s previous augmented reality integration with print.

“Augmented reality is a new human interface, where digital information and the physical world co-exist seamlessly,” says Bruno Uzzan, CEO and co-founder of Total Immersion in a release. “In The Search for WondLa, the viewer—or in this case, the reader—becomes part of the action. The result is an adventure that interacts and engages in amazing ways, and that suggests an equally amazing future for books that include this kind of digital magic.”

As the publishing group suggests, the young target audience for “The Search for WondLa” is coming of age in a time of tremendous digital innovation and the publishing industry is joining along.

BBC’s Focus Augmented Reality Cover set to be Scariest Ever

BBC Worldwide’s popular science and technology magazine Focus will next week go on sale with an augmented reality cover, set to be the scariest cover in magazine history.

The July issue cover will feature a Scream-style mask. When readers click on the 3D section of Focus magazine’s websiteand hold the cover in front of a webcam, a 3D spider will creep out of one of the eyes and run around the page, disappearing briefly behind the magazine before reappearing at the bottom of the cover.

Jheni Osman, Editor of Focus, said: “This issue of Focus will really test your nerves. And that’s exactly what we’re after – a really deep reader reaction. It’s fantastic to be able to interact with our readers in this way and it makes absolute sense for us to put into practice some of the technology that they are so used to reading about.”

The augmented reality content has been produced in collaboration with Total Immersion using its patented D’Fusion technology.

Myles Peyton, EMEA Sales Director at Total Immersion, said: “We are delighted to be working with Focus to create our first ever augmented reality magazine cover in the UK.

“This technology offers readers a completely new interactive experience and helps take printed magazines to a whole new digital level.  We have already launched augmented reality magazine covers in the US and France and there’s definitely the potential for augmented reality to become a more regular feature of magazine publishing as the technology evolves in the future.”

Readers of the July issue will also be able to use augmented reality technology to view a video of an exploding death star and a 3D model of two neutron stars colliding.

This science of fear special issue celebrates the 50th anniversary of Hitchcock’s Psycho, investigating what triggers fear, where phobias come from and how to beat them. The July issue of Focus will go on sale on 3rd June, priced £3.60.

Also available from 3rd June will be the Find Focus channel for the popular augmented reality app Layar. After installing the app onto their iPhone or Android mobile, readers can download the Find Focus channel to see the location of Focus retailers, and also find science and discovery centres around the UK. This will be the first channel of its kind for the UK magazine industry.
